Polyanionic Cellulose (PAC) is an advanced modified cellulosic polymer specifically engineered for superior fluid loss control and rheology modification in drilling operations and related applications. Qingdao Unionchem Co., Ltd. offers premium quality PAC products that deliver exceptional performance in water-based drilling fluids, completion fluids, and workover operations. Our PAC products are manufactured under strict ISO9001 quality management systems, ensuring consistent performance and reliability that meets international standards including API13A and ISO13500 specifications.
As a high-performance derivative of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), PAC features a higher degree of substitution and more uniform molecular structure, resulting in enhanced functionality in challenging drilling environments. Its unique chemical composition provides excellent filtration control, viscosity enhancement, and shale inhibition properties, making it an essential component in modern drilling fluid systems.
Unionchem's Polyanionic Cellulose portfolio includes several specialized grades designed to meet specific operational requirements:
Our standard PAC formulation provides balanced performance with moderate viscosity and excellent filtration control properties, suitable for a wide range of drilling operations.
Engineered for applications requiring enhanced rheological properties, PAC HV delivers superior viscosity and suspension capabilities while maintaining effective filtration control.
Specifically designed for operations where minimal viscosity impact is desired, PAC LV focuses on filtration control with minimal effect on fluid rheology, making it ideal for completion and workover operations.
Our ultra-low viscosity grade provides exceptional filtration control with minimal impact on fluid viscosity, perfect for reservoir drilling and completion operations where formation damage must be minimized.
Specially formulated to maintain performance at elevated temperatures, this variant ensures reliable filtration control and rheology modification in high-temperature wells and geothermal drilling operations.
Unionchem's PAC products create a thin, low-permeability filter cake that significantly reduces fluid loss to permeable formations. This exceptional filtration control:
Minimizes formation damage
Prevents differential sticking
Reduces water loss to water-sensitive formations
Maintains wellbore stability in challenging conditions
Our PAC products provide effective viscosity enhancement and shear-thinning behavior that:
Improves cutting transport efficiency
Enhances suspension of weighting materials
Provides better hole cleaning
Reduces torque and drag in directional drilling
PAC's anionic nature helps stabilize reactive shale formations by:
Reducing clay hydration and swelling
Minimizing shale disintegration
Preventing bit balling and accretion
Maintaining gauge hole in troublesome formations
Unionchem's PAC products are compatible with most water-based drilling fluid components:
Works effectively with various weighting materials
Compatible with common drilling fluid additives
Can be used in fresh water, seawater, or brine-based systems
Performs well in conjunction with other polymers and thinners
Manufactured in state-of-the-art facilities with:
ISO9001 certified quality management systems
API13A and ISO13500 compliance
Rigorous raw material testing
Comprehensive in-process controls
Advanced analytical capabilities
Consistent batch-to-batch performance

While both are cellulose derivatives, PAC features a higher degree of carboxymethyl substitution (DS typically 0.9-1.2 compared to 0.7-0.9 for CMC) and more uniform substitution pattern. This results in better salt tolerance, enhanced temperature stability, and superior filtration control properties. PAC also typically has better solubility in brines and provides more effective shale inhibition compared to standard CMC.
The primary difference lies in their molecular weight and viscosifying effect. PAC HV has a higher molecular weight, providing significant viscosity enhancement along with filtration control. PAC LV has a lower molecular weight, focusing primarily on filtration control with minimal impact on fluid viscosity. The choice between them depends on whether the application requires rheology modification in addition to fluid loss control.
Effective concentrations vary by application:
Water-based drilling fluids: 0.5-3.0 lb/bbl (1.4-8.6 kg/m³)
Completion fluids: 0.25-1.5 lb/bbl (0.7-4.3 kg/m³)
HDD applications: 1.0-4.0 lb/bbl (2.9-11.4 kg/m³)
Brine systems: 0.5-2.0 lb/bbl (1.4-5.7 kg/m³)
The optimal concentration depends on specific well conditions, formation characteristics, and desired fluid properties.
Our standard PAC grades maintain effectiveness up to approximately 135°C (275°F), while our high-temperature stable PAC formulations can perform reliably at temperatures up to 160°C (320°F). Temperature stability also depends on fluid composition, pH, and the presence of oxygen or contaminants.
For optimal performance, PAC should be added slowly through a venturi hopper or similar mixing device to prevent clumping. Pre-hydration in fresh water before addition to the main system is recommended for brine-based fluids. Adequate mixing time (typically 15-30 minutes) should be allowed for complete hydration and functionality development.
