Carboxymethyl cellulose is the Sodium salt of Carboxymethyl Cellulose, usually briefed as CMC. It is produced from cellulose, e.g. wood or cotton linters. The process of adding carboxymethyl cellulose group into the cellulose chain, which makes the cellulose soluble. It is biodegradable, non-toxic,environmental-friendly naturally derived hydrocolloids.
CMC is white or light yellowish odorless powder or granular. It is soluble in cold or hot water into clarified solution.CMC provides viscosity and rheology control in water based system, functions as thickener and binder in numbers of applications include food, pharm.toothpaste, paper making, textile, ceramic, oilfield, mining and batteries.
Properties and Characteristics of CMC:
*Excellent rheology control
*high viscosity build up
*Outstanding and stable suspension
*High water binding
*Stable in various PH and temperature fluctuations
Unionchem production manufactures a wide range of CMC specifications available to meet specific application needs, not only the standard grades CMC,but also customize the product to meet customer demand.
Unionchem CMC meets international food safety and quality regulations and rules. The food grade CMC meets EU Codex E-466,FCC and JECFA.The oilfield CMC meets API13A/ISO13500.
Standard Grades of CMC
Technical grade CMC: This is the lowest grade of CMC and is typically used in industrial applications, such as in the oil drilling and papermaking industries. Technical grade CMC is less pure than other grades of CMC and contains higher levels of impurities. It is used in industrial applications due to its high viscosity and ability to thicken liquids.
Food grade CMC: This grade of CMC is used in the food industry as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier. It is also used in personal care and cosmetic products, such as toothpaste, lotion, and shampoo. Food grade CMC is safe for human consumption and has excellent water-binding capacity. It is also highly stable over a range of pH and temperatures.
Pharmaceutical grade CMC: This grade of CMC is used in the pharmaceutical industry as a binder, disintegrant, and sustained-release agent. It is also used in medical devices, such as wound dressings and contact lenses. Pharmaceutical grade CMC is highly pure and has low levels of impurities. It is also biocompatible and has good mucoadhesive properties, making it suitable for use in oral and topical drug delivery systems.
Technical cosmetic grade CMC: This grade of CMC is used in the cosmetic industry as a thickener and emulsifier. It is used in products such as creams, lotions, and hair conditioners. Technical cosmetic grade CMC is similar to food grade CMC in terms of purity and properties. However, it is often processed differently to achieve specific characteristics, such as enhanced film-forming ability or improved compatibility with other cosmetic ingredients.
Industrial grade CMC: This grade of CMC is used in various industrial applications, such as in the production of detergents, ceramics, and textiles. Industrial grade CMC has a wide range of viscosities and properties, depending on the intended application. It is often used as a thickener, binder, and stabilizer in industrial products.
Overall, the different grades of CMC have specific properties that make them suitable for different applications. Choosing the right grade of CMC is important to ensure that the product has the desired properties and performs as expected.
Special grades of CMC：
Granular CMC for food or industrial application
Quick dispersible CMC for industrial application
Acid stable CMC
High purity High D.S.CMC
